Losing weight can be a struggle, but for many, it's one they think is worthwhile. However, while there are many different ways to help you drop the pounds, there are only a few healthy methods. It could be that you think you're willing to ignore the fact a diet could be bad for your health if it seems likely it will help you slim quickly, but you might feel a little differently about it if you thought your speedy diet could actually lead to you putting more weight on in the future. While dieting can be a healthy choice for anyone a little overweight, the way you do it is very important.

The number of diets to choose from is overwhelming, but the majority of diets you see in magazines and online are nothing more than fads - diets that have been made popular through rumours and celebrity endorsement. From the Hollywood Diet to the Cabbage Soup diet, you'll find that many of these weight loss programs actually offer very little in the way of benefits, as they are actually starvation diets first and foremost. This means that while you may lose a lot of weight in the very short term, you are very unlikely to keep this weight off.

When a diet asks you to fast for a long period of time or to drop your calorie intake too low, your body will eventually assume you are starving and will begin to absorb as much fat and sugar from food as it can in an attempt to keep you going. While this will not affect you so much for the duration of the diet, you are likely to see the impact as soon as you start eating normally again.

Other complicated diets, such as the Atkins or South Beach diets are designed to only allow you certain types of food groups at any one time. While these diets can also offer short term success, they are often causing dieters to miss out on vital nutrients, meaning they could start to suffer problems with things like their skin and hair as well as battle with feelings of general lethargy.

If you want to lose weight and do it well, the best plan is to cut your food intake but also increase the amount of exercise you take. It sounds simple, but it's something many people find difficult to stick to - hence the lure of fad diets. However, by reducing your calorific intake by approximately 500 a day - or, even better, cut your calories by 250 and make sure you do 250 calories worth of exercise - you will soon see the benefits.

While losing weight this way may take a little longer, the results will also be longer lasting. What's more, by sticking to a healthy diet, you'll still be able to enjoy healthy treats such as oat biscuits and tasty yogurts and sorbets without it throwing your weight loss plans completely off track.
